So, I signed up for an Ultramarathon. Part II

Athlete: Andre Leonard
Age: 54
Athlete experience: High school cross country runner, followed by two decades of no formal endurance sports. In late 30s, started running long distances and completed the Battleship Half Marathon, Wrightsville Beach Marathon, Big Sur Marathon. Transitioned to triathlons, and completed first Ironman in 2013, Beach2Battleship, and at this point have completed ten Iron distance triathlons.
Why: I like to seek the edge of my personal performance boundaries. I have no idea of how long or how far I can run. This race offers a safe venue to pursue this quest.
Goal: Go further than a marathon!
Mantra: “This is where it is made!”

Athlete: Jenny Perkins
Age: 43
Athlete experience: Did not start running at all until had daughter at age 33. Finishing first 5K was a huge accomplishment. In 2019, a friend challenged her to do the Wilmington Historic Half marathon; that is when the long awaited physical and mental magic of long distance running finally happened. She has been addicted ever since. Has complete Tobacco Road marathon followed by Kiawah marathon and has also participated in multiple team relays, most recently the Blue Ridge Relay.
Why: In general, running is for her mental and physical health and also for the sense of the community spirit. For this race, excited to see how deep she can dig; just keep swimming like Dori says. Looks forward to spend the day with a boatload of very cool characters.
Goal: Pass a marathon! Enjoy.
Mantra: I get to do this!
